You’re an Artist???
When people ask me about my art I say I do everything. By that I mean what’s my mood for the time being, what media I’m into, what class have I recently taken or the purpose of the art I’m trying to create.
Many times my creations come from seeing something and thinking how I might be able to improve it. So I go to my studio and brainstorm and experiment. Eventually I figure out a way to make it happen. Of course, its never exactly the same and I wouldn’t want it to be. Then it would not truly be my work.
Currently, I’m into wooden signs. I began this path of my career because my son was getting married and his fiancĂ© wanted signs at their reception. We made all kinds of signs. “Welcome to our wedding”, “desserts”, “wait til you see her”, “reserved” and so many more!
Painting on wood is a challenge because it is not a reliable surface. By that I mean it has texture, whether its a knot in the wood or the wood grain itself. And the wood absorbs the paint like crazy! These imperfections can change the direction of the paint. But they’re also what makes each piece unique.
Everyone loves this type of decor right now. I even like to teach classes on it because people don’t think they can do it. I have made signs on wood, glass and plexiglass.
Glass and Plexiglass are difficult because nothing will penetrate it. The paint just sits on the surface and will never soak in. Eventually it will come off but temporarily, it is beautiful. You can see the light shining through the colors. Soon I will experiment with glass etching. Sign up for my blogs and I will let you know how that goes!
